CHAPTER 14

An Imp amongst Fairies

Despite Iggy’s best efforts to deny it to himself, the Home Tree had once been his home too. He’d been found on the ground there when he was only a baby, wrapped in a small shawl which barely covered his shoulders. Lilleth had told him this story so many times when he was young. So many, in fact, that he could almost trick his mind into thinking it was an actual memory of his – not that he wanted it as a memory, of course.

Iggy could never be certain, but he believed that he was the only creature other than the fairies to have ever set foot inside the Home Tree.

Growing up he’d always thought of Lilleth as his mother, and the fairies as his family. As Iggy got older, however, their differences began to show. For one thing, Iggy had magic.

When he was young he’d have great fun practising making different colours spark out of his fingertips, and moving objects along far away shelves. As he practised, he’d occasionally catch glances from envious fairies and knew how jealous it made them. If he were honest with himself, that just made him want to practise even more. The idea of having something that everyone else wanted was thrilling; it made him feel like the King of the Home Tree. No matter how hard the fairies tried, they would never be as good as he was.

That, of course, was before they started to fly. Flying was something Iggy could not do. Just knowing that they could fly whilst he was on the ground made him feel pathetic.

He remembered, with spite, one particular morning when Lilleth had come to speak with him.

‘Iggy, may I speak with you?’

Back then, seeing Lilleth always made Iggy feel calmer. She was his mother, his safe place.

‘Yeah, of course. Everything okay?’

Lilleth approached the bed that Iggy lay upon and pursed her lips, as though bracing herself. ‘I’ve had some complaints regarding disagreements between you and the fairies. Is it true that you’ve been using magic against them?’

Iggy felt himself panic; he hated disappointing Lilleth. ‘Well … kind of, yes. But it’s not as bad as it sounds. They give just as good as they get, I promise!’

Lilleth held up her hand to silence Iggy. ‘That is beside the point, Iggy. The important thing here is that you have magic and they don’t! Magic can be very dangerous.’ Lilleth stared sternly at Iggy. ‘You will never use magic against any of my fairies ever again, do you understand me? Remember, I hear everything, Iggy. I hear about flames coming out of your fingers and jars that fall from nowhere, narrowly missing a fairy’s head. Why are you doing these things?’ Iggy wasn’t used to her voice sounding this way. Usually, she was so calm and steady, but now there was an anxious ring to her tone.

Iggy looked to his feet, hurt that he was getting all the blame and angry she could make him feel this.
